The Harman family has a long and proud history since coming to New Zealand in the mid 19th century and one which has become synonymous with the law in Canterbury. Richard James Strachan Harman arrived in New Zealand aboard the Sir George Seymour, on 17 December 1850.
His son Thomas DeRenzy Harman who founded the firm we know as Harmans Lawyers today, was born some 11 years after the family landed in New Zealand. He was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 1884 and four years later, set up his own practice as a Christchurch Solicitor. In the late 19th century, DeRenzy had two famous partners in the form of firstly, Heinirch Von Haast and then latterly, Thomas Hanmer, after whom Hanmer Springs is named.
Then, between the years of 1900 and 1909 DeRenzy was joined in partnership by Thomas Maude, brother of Nurse Maude. Upon dissolution of that partnership he practised law on his own account until 1924 when he was joined by his son Annesley DeRenzy Harman. The firm was thereafter known as T D Harman & Son.
The family tradition continued between 1956 and 1962 with three of Annesley Harman’s sons joining the family firm. The late Brian Harman joined the firm in 1956 and his brother’s, Colin in 1961 and lastly, Peter in 1962. Annesley Harman continued to practice law until his death in June 1977, the last four years as a consultant, having retired from the partnership in 1973.
The firm has expanded rapidly from the 1960’s onwards moving first to new premises in the GRE Building in Hereford St and then, in 1990 to the PricewaterhouseCoopers building in Armagh Street.
In 2003, the firm purchased Papanui Law, from Christchurch Lawyer John Horgan, merging it with Harmans’ existing Papanui branch and subsequently moving to the current premises at 485 Papanui Road.
With such a long and proud history, it is little wonder that Harmans have become one of Canterbury’s leading and most successful law firms. The firm is now able to offer an extensive range of legal services and presently has 9 partners and approximately 33 staff.
